The Secret to Life

Purposeful Parent Tip:  Do one thing really well every day.

I just finished reading, “Just Let Me Lie Down” by Kristin von Ogtrop. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Ogtrop at a local Ladies Who Launch event and she is just as she is in her book – funny, inspiring, a real mom. While reading about the trials and triumphs of her parenting journey and her quest to simply be able to lie down, my mind kept going back to the movie “City Slickers” and Mitch’s (Billy Crystal’s character) question of Curly (Jack Palance’s character) – “What’s the secret to life?” Continue reading

What is the Legacy You Are Leaving to Your Children?

Purposeful Parent Tip:  Your kids don’t want your stuff. They want you.

For those of you following me on Facebook, you know that my week has been consumed with what I have lovingly dubbed the “2012 Spring Cleaning Project.” For several days, I have scrubbed, dusted, vacuumed, sorted, discarded, and re-organized six rooms of my house. While there are a few more to go, the house already feels and looks better. Continue reading

Are Moms Really More Connected?

Purposeful Parent Tip:  Having a REAL support system is critical for parents.

I have met a lot of moms over the course of the past three years due to my baby gift business, Frittabello. And here’s what I have found. Despite the oodles of online channels that are available to connect all of us, moms are more disconnected than ever. Yes, we share lots of things online, but those real, true, face-to-face connections are disappearing. Continue reading

“Because I Said So!”

Purposeful Parent Tip: Saying Inane Things to Your Children is Inevitable…and OK!

“Why can’t I stay up longer?” “Why can’t I have another piece of cake?” “Why can’t I see that movie?” I used to answer those endless ‘why’ questions from my children with long explanations in which I hoped to illustrate that there were very good reasons why they were not permitted to do certain things. I felt it was important that they understood that I was acting in their best interest and they’d learn something. Then the pre-teen and teen years started and my explanations stopped. Cold. “Be Yourself. Everyone Else is Already Taken.”

Purposeful Parent Tip: You are doing the best you can…every day!

One of the reasons I started this blog was to inspire moms and dads to think a little a bit differently about their parenting. To tune into that little voice that knows exactly what you should do in any given moment. To help parents tap into your own “internal GPS system” to guide your little ones along their way. But most of all, to stop comparing and competing with other parents. Continue reading

Type A. Type B. It’s not the Label That Matters.

Purposeful Parent Tip:  Your children are unique and the only label they need is their name.

I admit it – I’m a Type-A person.  When people hear this, they typically conjure up descriptors like “perfectionist”, “control freak”, “inflexible”.  And at times, this may very well be true. I like things the way I like them. I prefer order over chaos and I like to see my goals come to fruition.  I have always struggled with ‘loosey-goosey’ and go-with-the-flow people. That is, until I gave birth to one. Continue reading
